Free Company Events
Frequently Asked Questions
What, you’re on both Omega and Ragnarok?
Yes, two FC’s on different servers, but with the same name and based on the same principles! Our community goes beyond servers! We also share a Discord server and do many events together.
How active is your Free Company?
Very active. There are members online every day (timezone CET) and our leadership has an active role and we expect that at least one of them is online every day. The FC chat is buzzing every day! Also we organize events every weekend, varying form clearing the latest EX content to doing treasuremaps together.
Is membership purely for people with a queer identity?
Though a queer identity will be our common denominator, we welcome allies as well. A straight ally or heterosexual ally is a heterosexual and cisgender person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, LGBT social movements, and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
Why a Free Company just for queer people and their allies?
Many view queer or LGBT+ themed groups as some sort of a self-chosen segregation. Gamers with a queer identity have a tendency and sometimes need to ‘stick together’, because there are many similarities in lifestyle and struggles. And it is a sad reality that even in this day and age, discrimination and intimidation is still prevalent. This Free Company is a haven for all who seek it.
I am transgender and I wish to join your Free Company. How trans-friendly are you?
We are open to all genders. And that means facilitating in expressing yourself and informing your fellow members. We have a special setup on our Discord server to assign yourself specific pronouns. We try to facilitate the best we can – and if there are still some ways to accomodate your gender identity or expression, you are most welcome to tell us.
Furthermore, we are mindful that the correct pronouns are used, and we promote this strongly within our Free Company to do so. We also openly condemn trans-unfriendly slurs.
We realize that many transgender-unfriendly behavior stems not from malevolence, but from ignorance. And the best way to battle ignorance is that we inform and teach ourselves – that is the way to achieve queer excellence – to make each other wiser and more aware.
So what kinds of events do you organize?
The complexity of the events varies, some events are more easy to organize than others. We ask our members on a weekly basis with a Discord poll what events they might be interested in doing the upcoming week(end). Some examples of those events include: mount farms, clearing older content (Bahamut, Alexander raids), treasure maps, clearing current tier content (even attempting Extreme and Savage).
Sometimes we organize larger events where our members can win various prizes and titles, such as fashion contests, housing/interior contests, pop quizzes (FF or FF XIV lore) and speedruns. These take some more time to organize but are organized every one or two months.
I wish to join your Discord server, but I do not feel comfortable talking in voice. Is that okay?
That is alright! We are aware that this can be a concern among trans people, and we fully respect you not joining voice channels. There are many text channels where you can communicate with your fellow members.
Though it is our deepest wish that you feel comfortable. We wish to create an environment of respect. If you wish to join us in voice-channels, we will welcome you with open arms – but only if you feel like it.
I just joined the game and I love it! Do you welcome new players?
Yes. Though many of our members are on par with the latest content, it is our (general) desire to spread the love for this game among new players. That means the most of us (we cannot speak for all ofcourse) are willing to explain the features of this crazy content-rich and awesome game. So feel free to ask for advice about classes, dungeons and other content. And we aren’t shy to help you out running older content!
Is the Free Company considerate of people with mental or social problems?
Queer people are prone to mental illness and social issues. That is a truth we should not shy away from. It’s an uncomfortable but important reality that LGBT youth are four times more likely to kill themselves than their cis-gender heterosexual counterparts. More than half of individuals who identify as transgender experience depression or anxiety. We, as a community, struggle disproportionately. Accepting one’s self in the face of adversity often takes a toll.
As a community of fighters, we encourage our members to be accepting of their state of mental health as they are of their sexuality or gender identity. And aspire to create an environment where members feel accepted.
Whoa! "Make Eorzea Gay Again" sounds a lot like...
Yes, that certain slogan by that certain orange president. And no, we absolutely do not affiliate with conservative politics and bigotry.
The choice for “Make Eorzea Gay Again” is purely using reappropriation to make things that seem to hurt into something we own. Reappropriaton is a cultural process by which we as a queer community reclaim words that were/are used in a way disparaging of our community. It is a specific form of a semantic change (change in a word’s meaning). What we own, cannot hurt us. This is not the first time queer people used reappropriation on a negative expression. Just take a look at the word queer itself.
Some people are quick to point out the similarities, and are quick to judge us for a poorly chosen name. But as you can read, we have given it quite a thought! :-) Besides, the abbreviation MEGA sounds pretty awesome.
In which timezones are you active?
Since we are on an EU server and datacenter (Omega/Ragnarok, Chaos) most of the members reside in European time zones. However, we also have some members residing further west or east (from the US to the Middle East).
Where is your Free Company house located?
M.E.G.A. Omega chapter’s large mansion “Pride Everlasting” is located in Shirogane, 16th Ward, Plot 7. They have a workshop (including airships and submersibles), various NPC’s for shopping, a photo studio, a runway and various areas for relaxing and interaction (baths, library, bar).
M.E.G.A. Ragnarok chapter’s medium mansion “Over The Rainbow” is located in The Goblet, 10th Ward, Plot 55. They have a workshop (including airships and submersibles), various NPC’s for shopping, a runway, a beautiful garden and various areas for relaxing and interaction (livingroom, library, bar).
Please stop by and say hi!
What is your recruitment policy?
First and foremost: You are always welcome to join. We try to have a balance between quality and quantity. A balance between an active and growing FC and being a tight-knit family. But how can a Free Company grow without people becoming strangers to one another?
We tend to recruit in short bursts through shouting in the large area’s and city states. After a few members have joined we will refrain from further recruitment for a while. In this time, we get to know people better. What are the goals in-game? And how can we help one another?
And if the new members are settled, it might be time for some new recruitment. We want to be a haven an community to all who desire it. We believe in our message. That means we should never shut our doors and get our message across.
How do I become a part of your Free Company?
You can apply through our company profile. This can be accessed by right-clicking our members and checking their profile. In the meantime you can become a member of our Discord server. There you can introduce yourself and read about our guiding principles. If you have introduced yourself, we approve your membership of the FC and you will be able to access all channels.
I want to become a member. What is expected of me?
Just be an active, social and happy member and act accordingly to our guiding principles. There are not many ‘don’ts’; we do not condone discrimination, theft or other bad and disruptive behavior.
We strongly suggest you join us on Discord. Social activity, voice chat and Free Company announcements are done there.
What is the language of communication within the Free Company?
English is the main language of communication.
Can I join the Discord server, but not the Free Company?
Though we prefer to have the members of our Discord server all in our Free Company, we know that there can be reasons not to join. Maybe you are already in a cool FC where you have great contacts and fun. Or maybe you are not ready to openly affiliate yourself with a queer FC.
We grant non-FC members with a special status on Discord; not all content can be seen (such as Free Company dynamics as events and content runs), but the social channels are open to interact with our members. And who knows, maybe we can convince you to join our ranks eventually?
